Authors: Nina Bačun & Juan Echeverry
Broken heart understands no reason, following the unconscious desire of bringing the loved one back or seeing him/her suffer, it approaches witchcraft to find magical answers to its despair. Following the aesthetics and the use of graphic and written language and the surrounding iconography related to Witchcraft and Supernatural Merchandise authors intend to transfer and make reachable a portion of products, from esoteric markets in Mexico, Colombia, and other countries of South America, that deal with the broken hearted.
This powders and soaps are supposed to help a person to reach a specific aim. A vast quantity of these powders and soaps deal with emotional or love related subjects, usually focused on getting the loved one back, keeping a person close by, or breaking the relationship. The environment of these products is seat in a specific cultural background and a particular social space were this naïve and poorly designed objects serve a propose beyond its packaging.
The images (often drawn by non educated artists) combined with a simple text (usually badly composed) guide the costumer on how this product works or what it does. Anyhow it does not gives further clues to what they are made of, leaving the content imprecise and mysterious. Authors believe that the specific packaging of Polvos Legitimos (constant in different countries of South America) feeds the powders with a special charm through its peculiar sense and ambivalence; being sealed but opened — packed in a see through bag but covered with paper that keeps visibility of its content unreachable. Simple but elaborate, this objects become a paradox them selves. They empower the mysterious content with anuncomfortable aura. Authors intend to maintain a contemporary approach by entering the queer domain.
